Hook Head - The Oldest Lighthouse

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2001

Certainly the oldest lighthouse on the Irish Sea, and possibly also in Europe, Hook Head on the Wexford Coast was established by monks in the 13th Century. The distinctive lighthouse  has almost continuously provided a warning beacon to mariners except during Cromwellian times.  Now automated, a visitor centre has been opened. Tours of the medieval tower are offered to visitors.
