| During week beginning January 09, 2012 operations to remove the former tank farm at the abandoned Mobil Birkenhead Works commenced. Ravestein SKYLINE BARGE 15 which had previously been used as the temporary Mersey Ferries landing stage until 2010 and as a construction platform in association with the installation of the new Mersey Ferries landing stage during autumn 2011 has been put into service again this time to convey the old oil tanks from Birkenhead Docks to Liverpool. The Carmet Tug Company have been providing towage for the dumb barge with M.S.C. VICTORY as lead tug assisted at the rear by push tug VIGOUR and the former MD&HC survey vessel AESTUS which is now part of the Carmet fleet. It is quite unusual to see any of the Manchester Ship Canal tugs outside of the confines of the ship canal. These views were taken on Saturday January 14, and show the three Carmet vessels propelling the barge back to the former Mobil site at West Float, Birkenhead Docks. |
