The Samuel Beckett Bridge Moved into Position on the Liffey

Photographs © Tony Brennan 2009

The photographs show the new cable stayed Samuel Beckett Bridge designed by Spanish architect and engineer, Dr Santiago Calatrava being moved through the East Link lift bridge on May 13, 2009 by Dublin Port Company tugs. The bridge had been delivered to Dublin Port on a barge by tugs RT MAGIC  and EN AVANT 7 from Rotterdam - top left photographs.

It had been intended to move the bridge during the early hours of Tuesday morning to avoid traffic disruption, however, plans were thwarted by high winds and the move had to take place during the day on Wednesday.

When the bridge opens in early next, it will link Guild Street on the north side of the city with Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side. It will have four traffic lanes, cycle tracks and footpaths, and has the capacity to facilitate bus and light rail in the future.
