| The six-oared pilot gig is a rowing boat unique to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly; the history of pilot gig racing can be traced back to the 1790’s. The vessels were built to convey pilots out to ships on the western approaches. They were built for speed and can also deploy sail. The tradition of racing developed from the competitive element between crews in getting their pilot out to the in bound ship.
