Laid Up Ships at the The Fal-Carrick Moorings

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2009

The lay-up moorings provided by the Carrick Harbour - Port of Truro on the upper reaches of the River Fal have often been considered a barometer of world trade - the more ships laid up the greater the economic trading woes. In recent years the lay-up moorings have been fairly quiet with just the occasional vessel awaiting employment. However, as reported in the news pages during the early part of 2009 the moorings have filled up rapidly during early 2009. On Christmas Eve 2008 UECC Car Carrier AUTOLINE owned by UECC Isle of Man Ltd and PIETARI GLORY operated by Polaris Maritime of London were laid up. Just two months later UECC's AUTOLINE has been joined by her sister AUTOTRANSPORTER.

PIETARI GLORY has been joined by two fleet-mates PIETARI CLIFF & PIETARI BRIGHT. Meanwhile around the bend in the river at Tolverne, the long time lay-up WINDSOR CASTLE of Tamahine Shipping has been joined by ADVENTURE II and fleet mate CHALLENGER II operated by Svendborg Ship Management and chartered to Britannia Bulk (britbulk.com) However, Britbulk entered administration in. It also appeared when visiting the location, beyond the WINDSOR CASTLE berthed astern of ADVENTURE II, lay another unidentified ship - possibly another car carrier.
