The above photographs show some of the maritime construction equipment involved in the runway extension project at Ronaldsway Airport. The three photographs top left show the dumb barge CHARLIE ROCK loaded with rock at Victoria Pier Douglas in the charge of tug LUNA A. This barge is used to land rocks inshore from the larger Stema shipping barge which is anchored off Derbyhaven which has a cargo capacity of 25,000 tons. The rock for the runway extension is being imported from Norway - somewhat appropriate given the Isle of Man's Viking connections! Maritime Craft Services MCS LENIE is a "Shoalbuster" tug with 40+ tonne bollard pull. Completed in 2008 she has a 100 ton winch, hydraulic crane and accommodation for 7 crew in 5 cabins. She can be seen alongside the flexible pipeline used to bring ashore sand being brought to the site by the large dredger PEARL RIVER. Photographs were taken from Laxey Towing Company's KARINA on the afternoon cruise to Derbyhaven on July 29, 2009. She can be seen in the bottom right photograph disembarking at Douglas Sea Terminal. |
