HNoMY NORGE was built by Camper and Nicholson at Southampton and launched in 1937 as the PHILANTE for Sir Thomas Sopwith. During WWII it acted as a convoy escort ship. After WWII, Sir Thomas experienced a period of financial difficulties before going on to found Hawker-Siddeley. During the immediate post war period she was bought by Norway in 1947 time for King Haakon's 75th Birthday. She was refitted and renamed NORGE in 1948.
