A Planet With an Uncertain Future in Liverpool

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2007

Light Vessel PLANET adds a splash of colour to Canning basin on a bright February afternoon. Sadly this historic vessel built in 1961 by Philip of Dartmouth to mark the Liverpool Bar - looks set to leave Merseyside for Manchester thanks' to the "anti-ship" policy which pervades within the Albert Dock complex. The owners of the dock only appear to want small craft berthed there and as a result the vessel has been moved out of the Albert Dock and into Canning Half Tide Dock in front of the Mersey Maritime Museum.

However, the berth outside the Maritime Museum used by visiting vessel and according to the press PLANET has to be moved by mid March. Her owner has converted her to a recording studio and had hoped to keep her on Merseyside where she could have been used by students from the Liverpool School of Performing Arts.  Whilst the management of the Albert Dock appear to want to chase the former Liverpool Bar Lightship away from Merseyside, the authorities in Salford appear more than delighted to see her moved up the Manchester Ship Canal.
