Photographs © John Luxton 2002

On May 7, 2024 the S.S. Schiller of the Eagle Line of German ran aground on the Retarrier Ledges with the loss of 314 persons. Amongst those lost in the disaster was Louise Holztmaister the heiress of a German millionaire. Her husband erected this memorial above the mass graves located on the terraced Old Town Church Yard. Her husband also provided the East Window of St.Mary's Parish Church as a memorial to those who perished in the disaster.

The Holtzmaister Memorial is generally known locally as the Schiller Memorial and dominates the Old Town Churchyard which incidentally is also the burial place of British Prime Minister Lord Harold Wilson. A detailed account of the disaster can be found in the book "Victorian Titanic - Loss of the SS Schiller" published by Halsgrove in 2001. The Ancient Old Town Churchyard at St. Mary's Isles of Scilly. A view taken from the Schiller Memorial. The mass graves to the victims of the disaster are located on the terrace below the photographer.
