Neil writes: The 'Holyhead Ferry 1' was seen at Dun Laoghaire in August 1966 - immediately following the shipping strike of that year. We had arrived in Dublin from London on the 'Hibernian Coast' on her first trip after that strike. My wife well remembers Capt. George Maerns who kept us all amused with his personal reminiscences of local Irish life in Wexford, Arklow etc. on the passage up from Tuskar Rock. The 'Hibernian Coast' (built as 'Aberdonian Coast' and sister to the 'Caledonian Coast') was built by Hall Russell in 1947 and for a coastal cargo ship was fast - capable of 14knots. The voyage from East India Dock in London to Dublin being completed in 48 hours. The ultimate destination was usually the West Trafalgar |
