2004 HUMOUR & RUMOUR PAGE

Taking a look at the lighter side of Maritime News and Unsubstantiated  Gossip and Rumour!

YELLOW SUBMARINE & BLUE PETER SET SAIL December 11
Ardent ship spotters on Merseyside may have noticed that the Beetles Yellow Submarine has sailed from her usual berth at Chavasse Park and surfaced in the car park at the west end of the Stanley Abattoir!

Does anyone know where the "Blue Peter" ship has sailed to? Last seen at her berth outside the Canning Place Police station?

MONTAGU LIVERPOOL - DUBLIN RUMOURS November 17
There is a rumour going about that Montagu are going to run the Liverpool - Dublin service as a separate company to the Isle of Man Steam Packet and that this operation may involve freight. The fact that there is no reference to a Liverpool - Dublin service anywhere in the Isle of Man Steam Packet Timetable indicated that there was likely to be some change in the operator of this service.

Also one wonders could there just be some tie-in with the fact that P&O may still want to off load the P&O ro/pax service between Liverpool and Dublin?

IT APPEARS THIS WAS A RUMOUR AND NOTHING MORE - THE DECISION TO CLOSE THE LIVERPOOL - DUBLIN ROUTE WAS ANNOUNCED ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004.

LIGHTSHIP PLANET SOLD? October 17
There is a strong rumour circulating on the Mersey waterfront that Liverpool Bar Lightship PLANET, currently berthed at the Historic Warships site at Birkenhead has been sold. It is believed she will be moved to Fleetwood, possibly for some commercial venture. The vessel has been up for sale for some time, though the Lightship Planet Society had been reported as trying to raise funds to buy her

If true its a sad day for a fine example of Mersey Maritime Heritage. Why couldn't she have found a home at the Merseyside Maritime Museum?

REDDINGTON TO BUY CAMMELL LAIRDS NORTH YARD October 03
There is a rumour doing the rounds on the Mersey waterfront that the developers Reddington Finance [owners of Cammell Laird South Yard] will make an announcement in the next few weeks announcing they have purchased the Cammell Laird North Yard from A&P Birkenhead for around £15m. The yard will then be leased back to A&P on a 25 year deal.
WOODCHURCH TO BECOME SNOWDROP ??? May 16
Picked up a rumour from a correspondent that the Mersey Ferry WOODCHURCH currently being rebuilt at the A&P Birkenhead yard may be renamed Snowdrop.

If true this would resurrect a former Wallasey Ferries name not used for many years, but would mean that none of the current vessels would carry a Birkenhead Ferries name.

Whether there is any substance to this rumour remains to be seen.
